Science Fair Fever Sweeps Through Moreland -
April 2010

February and March had three of Moreland’s school coming down with science fair fever!

Moreland Middle School held their annual Science Expo on March 25, and the turnout was tremendous! Over 220 students from 6th through 8th grade participated. In addition to traditional science fair projects, students could compete in three highly anticipated competitions: weight suspension from toothpick bridges, catapult accuracy in launching ping pong balls, and highest number of textbooks a toothpick tower could hold. Claire Medina’s toothpick tower was the highlight of the evening; the innovative student stacked sixty three 8th grade science texts on her tower, breaking a four year record by over 20 pounds! First, second, and third place winners in each competition received gift cards for their efforts. MMS wishes to thank the MMS Home and School Club and volunteers, the many members of the MMSstaffwho helped out, Mr. Glen Kimoto, and all MMS parents, students, and community.

On February 25, Easterbrook Discovery School held their annual elementary science fair.Science projects were mandatory for 4th and 5th graders, and many K-3 students participated voluntarily.EDS principal, Sherri Vasquez, reported that the variety of projects and ideas amazed the crowd! With over 250 experiments presented, the fair was very well attended by participating students’ families. With the wide range of scientific data presented, everyone left having learned something new!

Payne’s science fair took place on February 24, with 125 students participating in the event and over 300 people in attendance. Participation was mandatory for 5th grade, but over 60 K-4th graders chose to enter as well. Some stand-out projects included exploding volcanoes, solar powered robots, homemade litmus paper, and an optical illusion display. Each participant was awarded a ribbon and certificate. The Payne staff wishes to thank the many parent volunteers, and their science fair committee: Kassie Gray, Lara Marshall, Jamie Acosta, Ed Tanaka and Robert Furgurson.
