The Moreland Board of Trustees is comprised of five elected members from the MSD community.

Budget Development Process

The Moreland School District staff and the Board of Trustees will be working to craft a budget based on the Governor's January proposal (and later revisions), and we would like you to be involved in that process. Click here to see the Budget Development Calendar.

Here are a couple ways you can help and learn more:
Attend the District's Budget Works Study sessions and Board Meetings (please call 408-874-2901 or check the Board Agenda for the time.) Additional Board Meetings regarding the budget can be found here.

Be sure that your child is in school every day. The District only receives revenue from the state for days that your child is in attendance.

Lori Booroojian, President e-mail
Ms. Booroojian is married and the parent of three children who all attended school in the Moreland School District and are now in high school and college. Lori grew up in the Bay Area, attended public schools and received a degree from Santa Clara University. Her professional background is in corporate finance. She has been a member of the Governing School Board since October of 2001 and prior to that served for three years on the Moreland District's Personnel Commission.

Heather Sutton, Clerk e-mail
Board member Heather Sutton was elected in November 2006 after being appointed to the Moreland Board of Trustees in January, 2006. Mrs. Sutton lives in the Payne Elementary attendance area, is a life-long Moreland resident, Moreland alumna, and parent of three Moreland students currently attending Payne Elementary and Moreland Middle School. Mrs. Sutton served as President of the Payne Elementary Home and School Club, co-founded The San Tomas West Neighborhood Association, and continues to serve on a variety of school, district, city, and community committees and organizations including the Moreland Educational Foundation.

Brian Penzel , Member e-mail
Mr. Brian Penzel was appointed to the Board of Trustees in April, 2011. A parent of three soon-to-be students of the Moreland School District, Brian is married and lives in Saratoga.

Brian has been with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney since 2001. He is currently responsible for relationship management, project management, and implementation. In addition to his work on equity based benefit programs, Brian works with foundations and other institutional investment consulting clients through the Graystone Consulting practice at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

Brian is a CEP and Board Chair of the Corporate Services committee for APIC (Association of Professional Investment Consultants), and a Director Emeritus of Goodwill Industries of San Francisco having served with the board for 8 years.

A former United States Army Captain, Brian graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Management in Finance from Tulane University.

Robert Varich, Member e-mail
Mr. Varich is married and the parent of two children. They attend Country Lane and Prospect High School.  Mr. Varich, a Moreland alumnus, has served on the Board of Trustees since May of 2004.  Prior to Mr. Varich’s joining the Board of Trustees he had served on the team that passed Measure J, The Bond Oversight Committee, and Chair of the Personnel Commission.  Mr. Varich also has served on the City of San Jose’s Megan Law Task Force and as Chairman of the Appeals Hearing Board. He also coached high school football. 

Robert is a very involved parent in the Country Lane and Prospect HS community and served as co-chair of the Country Lane Walk-a-Thon.  Mr. Varich is the owner of Pinnacle One Insurance, a Robert Varich Insurance Agency and Allstate Insurance, on Saratoga Avenue in the Moreland attendance area as well as agencies in Milpitas and Santa Cruz.

Karen Whipple, Member e-mail
Mrs. Karen Whipple was elected to the Board of Trustees in November 2006.  She is the parent of three children who have attended Moreland schools since kindergarten.  Karen attended high school in Cupertino and graduated from University of California Davis with a BA in Rhetoric and Communication.  Her professional experience is focused on courseware design and training in the software industry.

Prior to serving on the Board of Education, Karen served as President of the Country Lane Home and School Club, was a member of two District Facilities Task Forces, and assisted with Music in Moreland fundraisers. Additionally, she has worked with Moreland students through Project Cornerstone and as a tutor and substitute teacher within the district.  Karen continues to stay active with students in the community through Girl Scouts and youth sports.
